Venturing out to the suburbs over the weekend has made me appreciate living a minimalist lifestyle in an oversized studio. Close to my office and with my commute being ferry stops at 100 metres from my home and office door, it is bliss.

However, this has been my exploration into the burbs ordeal and the dilemma facing employers.

Saturday Night McMahons Point to Epping

  • 50-minute stop-start jerking bus ride to friends for a dinner
  • The 180-minute train ride home, due to missing the hourly bus service and track work that terminated the journey 3/4 of the way and the change over to the light rail that is ever so slow
  • Arrive at ferry stop only to be told ferries are cancelled due to lack of staff (COVID), so next one in 2.5 hours (11.40 PM)

Sunday Sydney City to Bondi Beach

  • The 45-minute stop-start bus ride to Bondi Beach
  • 55-minute stop-start bus ride that terminated 2km early due to a city protest

Long commutes on public transport have never been my jam; I would rather ride my bike if I have a safe bike path by the river or harbour than public transport, or walk if within an hours walk. Getting…
